Is it possible to do good stop-motion animation with a standard home camcorder?

I have a Sony HD camcorder, and I was wondering if it’s possible to do stop-motion animation. I tried pressing the “record” button quickly, but it usually records at least a half second every time I do this and that’s much too much time to do effective stop motion animation. Is there another way to do it?

How Do You Make A Stop Motion Animation Using People?

I decided to make a stop motion animation for A2 media studies coursework and I have a general idea of how to do it, but am I right in thinking I need about 30 frames a second?
And when a person is walking would I have to move them forward as well so the background looks as if it is moving?
