Fashion 101: A Crash Course in Clothing
From School Library Journal
Adult/High School—Recognizing fashion styles and trends is one thing; putting them together in new and interesting ways is an altogether different animal. This handy guide helps with both the recognition of fashion dos and don’ts as well as with the development of new—and true—personal styles. It is part history, part fashion adviser, part shopping manual, and all fun. Each item of female clothing, from dresses to accessories to pants to underwear, is covered, with great black-and-white and color illustrations. Sections for each garment include what it looks like, the designer who first introduced it, celebrities who made it hot, and how it can be worn today. Who would have thought that parachute pants could be made rockin’? This would make a good addition to browsing collections, especially in larger libraries and those that have an abundance of fashion-forward or aspiring-designer teens.—Charli Osborne, Oxford Public Library, MI Cop… Read more…

How to Be a Working Comic: An Insider’s Guide to a Career in Stand-Up Comedy
From Library Journal
Schwensen, former talent coordinator for A&E’s An Evening at the Improv, reminds us that comedy is a business and provides specific and useful advice on basic issues such as headshots, resumes, and agents. While Schwensen sensibly advises novices to be original and to work steadily at stage time, Jay Sankey’s Zen and the Art of Stand-Up Comedy (LJ 5/1/98) offers much more on the craft of performance. Nearly half of this book is devoted to brief interviews with 12 top comedians (e.g., Drew Carey, Rhonda Shear, and Rene Hicks). While Jeff Dunham observes that “comedy has taken such a nose-dive,” Schwensen does not otherwise acknowledge that comedians face a shrinking stand-up industry. For strong performing arts collections.?Norman Oder, “Library Journal”Copyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.

All Kinds of Families!
From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 3—Hoberman has tackled the elusive question of what makes a family a family in this sometimes silly, sometimes serious book of rhymes. She likens families to numerous items that share a relationship and are inherently the same. Her refrain says it all, “Bottle caps, gingersnaps, buttons, or rings/You can make families from all sorts of things!” Other families include tools, balloons, thimbles, and marbles, but the verses make it clear that human families are much more than a conglomeration of like, easily categorized, things; they share a human history and the promise of many more families to come. No matter what, making a family is about seeing the likenesses, not the differences. Boutavant provides colorful illustrations that vary from page to page, but as a group, complement the rhymes. Pair this with Jusin Richardson and Peter Parnell’s And Tango Makes Three (S & S, 2005), Arnold Adoff’s Black Is Brown Is Tan (HarperColl… Read more…

For twentysomethings and thirtysomethings, controlling one’s financial life is a challenge many times exacerbated by a lack of knowledge about how money works. Author Kobliner, herself under 30, has assembled an excellent collection of basic money management principles and has specially tailored this presentation to the particular interests of these age groups. She discusses investing in mutual funds, tax-deferred savings plans, staying away from ATMs, legal tax deductions, understanding the minimal return on bank passbook savings accounts, tearing up credit cards, 401k plans and IRAs, and other important topics. Kobliner, who narrates her own work, emphasizes the personal discipline required to implement these sound suggestions, an example of her keen insights with this targeted audience and her experience as a contributor to Money magazine. This neatly summarized material?short and sweet, just like this age group will want?nicely accompanies such … Read more…
