The Education of Shelby Knox

Description
Shelby Knox–a wide-eyed, precocious activist–is the star of THE EDUCATION OF SHELBY KNOX, a riveting tale of one girl’s mission to bring sex education to schools in her ultra-conservative hometown of Lubbock, Texas. Bursting with original characters, including an intolerant preacher crusading for abstinence, Shelby’s skeptical but loving Republican parents, and Lubbock’s tiny-but-vocal gay youth movement, the film richly captures an unusual coming of age story. In a town filled with religious fervor, sexual ferment, abstinence-only agitators and teenage pregnancy, Shelby struggles with her conflicting values and comes to terms with her own sexuality. In the process, she becomes an endearing and honest guide to the national moral morass. Unafraid to tackle pressing, complex questions, the film is supercharged with religion, politics, sex and the cultural warriors and ordinary people who battle over these hot-button issues. Skillfully crafted by award-winnin… More >> Read more…

What celebrity do you think will be hounded by the media like Michael JAckson was?
A young celebrity who is right now kind of safe but as they get older will be hounded and unfortunately involved in some scandal.
Oddly enough, I think the girl from transformers has all the signs. She is safe now, but people comparing her to angelina jolie, her tatoos and viewpoints which seem more liberal. This all points to someone who could be the next tabloid regent. MJ was as much the king of pop as the king of the tabloids.

What are some good books to improve a first-grade reading level?
I’m giving a few books to a girl who is in third grade but has a first-grade reading level. Should I give her first grade books, second grade books, or third grade books? What’s going to improve her reading level? Does anyone have any suggestions that I could easily find at Barnes and Noble tonight. As for the type of book, anything goes, but I want 1 or 2 books about puppies because that is one thing that I know she likes.

What Are Those Fitness Walk Trails With Exercise Stations Called?
Back in Girl Scouts we would go on a hike at a park that would have a fitness trail. Along the fitness trail there would be stations set up where you do jumping jacks, pull-ups, walking a beam, etc. I have seen them by office buildings and apartment complexes too. What I want to do is find out what they are officially called so I can do a search online. Thanks! (PS: I am from the Schaumburg, IL area if that helps.)

Chicken Soup for the African American Soul: Celebrating and Sharing Our Culture, One Story at a Time
From Publishers Weekly
This newest addition to the bestselling series features Chicken Soup’s trademark stories in a “tribute to a culture that prides itself on survival, resiliency, healing, prayer and perseverance.” This collection hits all those notes, with inspiring contributions from familiar names, including Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela and Maya Angelou, as well as heartfelt vignettes from everyday folks. While the writing quality varies, most essays are moving. Stories of helping others, of gifts received from strangers and of pursuing one’s dreams speak to our common humanity. Yet the struggle of being black in America pervades this collection; many contributors discuss issues of identity, discrimination and injustice. Writers describe the difficulty of becoming comfortable in one’s skin; of not being “a Black girl posing in a white girl get-up.” Most writers also make clear that as they meet challenges, they honor the past and forge into the future: “… Read more…
